Carrying the Olympic Flame through Loughborough - 3rd July, 2012
The Olympic Flame will travel through Loughborough's campus on Day 46 of the Olympic Torch Relay on Tuesday 3rd July. It has also been announced that a trio of Torchbearers have been chosen to represent the University as part of Samsung’s nomination programme for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. The chosen Torchbearers include Rachel Thomson - Professor of Materials Engineering and Director of the Materials Research School, Dan Greaves - Paralympian and Loughborough University graduate,at the University, and current student Rebecca Willison.
Caroline Walker, Chief Operating Officer at Loughborough University, said: “The Torch Relay is yet another very exciting part of London 2012. It’s perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a real piece of Olympic history and I would encourage everyone on campus and members of the local community to come along and celebrate the event with us.”
DEFRA Research Study by Loughborough University questions the environmental credentials of ‘degradable’ plastics
Some plastics marked as ‘degradable’ might not be as environmentally-friendly as consumers think, according to new Defra-funded research carried out by Loughborough University which questions the environmental impact of ‘degradable’ plastics. See Defra news release
TSB backing for IMPACT project
The IMPACT project – Innovative Materials, Design and Monitoring of Power Plant to Accommodate Carbon Capture – has been awarded £908k funding by the TSB as part of a major government investment scheme to stimulate carton abatement technologies. The consortia members of IMPACT are E.ON (lead), Goodwin Steel Castings Ltd, RWE Npower plc, Doosan Babcock Energy Ltd, NPL Management Ltd, Loughborough University and Alstom Power Ltd. The key goal of this project is to improve the efficiency of future steel-based coal-fired power plant, and hence reduce carbon emissions. Full press release»
Loughborough’s track record in solar
In solar circles, the University is making a name for itself as a centre for photovoltaic research and development. In particular, CREST, the University’s Centre for Renewable Energy Systems and Technology, is establishing a reputation for working on successful PV projects relevant to today’s industrial requirements.
