Welcome
Materials are a ubiquitous part of our society, from commodity plastics to advanced superalloys for jet engines. Many areas of economic activity are dependent on a vast range of materials. Materials developments will play a vital role in addressing the key challenges facing society in the 21st century; including energy, sustainable development, healthcare, security, information and communications technologies.
The Materials Research School focuses on bringing together the significant strengths in materials research across Loughborough University to tackle projects which demand a multidisciplinary approach. The School is supported by an excellent range of state of the art experimental facilities for materials research. There are a wide range of ongoing research projects, carried out in collaboration with UK and international academic institutions, research organisations and companies. Particular emphasis is placed on providing solutions to real industrial problems, from life extension of current engineering components to the development of novel materials.
Activities of the School include regular newsletters to advise of events, conferences, news and funding opportunities, monthly Technical Workshops to facilitate collaboration and networking, seminars for research students to teach them different analytical techniques, the provision of research studentships and summer bursaries to stimulate new avenues of research in strategically important areas, and the development and maintenance of a web-based resource which catalogues all of the equipment available across the campus for materials research.
