Word 2007 Auto-Numbering

Screen shot: Word 2007.

How do I set up automatic numbering of Headings in Word 2007?

You can have Headings (selected by Styles Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) automatically numbered. The first question is: Do you want the document automatically numbered like a legal document with all the heading styles automatically numbered (e.g. 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2, 2.1, ...), or do you just want Heading 1 automatically numbered (e.g. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.).

Legal Document Numbering

  1. Go to the first Heading 1-styled text in your document (insert some if you haven't got any) and click in it.

  2. On the Home tab in the Paragraph group you will see three buttons at the top left of the group (reading left-to-right): Bulleted List, Numbered List, and Multi-Level list. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Multilevel List button.

    Multilevel List button.

  3. Select a numbering scheme.

    Multilevel List drop-down menu.

  4. To customise, select Define New Multivel List (near the bottom).

    Define new Multilevel list.

  5. Make your selections. For example, you could add the word "Chapter " in front of the 1 in Enter formatting for number. Note that there is a More button.

  6. Click OK to close the Define new Multilevel List dialogue.

Automatically numbering just the Chapters / Heading 1

  1. From the Home tab, open the Styles window by clicking the "widget" at the bottom right of the Styles group, or press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S.

    Open Styles dialogue widget.

  2. Move the mouse over Heading 1, click on the drop-down widget and select Modify.

    Modify Heading 1.

  3. Click on Format and select Numbering.

    Format: Numbering.

  4. On the Numbering tab select a style.

Numbering and Bullets - Numbering tab.

  5. You can also use the Define New Number Format button for further customisation e.g. for automatically inserting the word "Chapter".

    Define New Number Format.

  6. Click OK to close the Define New Number Format dialogue.

  7. Click OK to close the Numbering and Bullets dialogue.
