Manually Configuring WiFi on Apple iPhone

Introduction

These instructions are suitable for the iPhone (and iPod Touch), running firmware v2.x or greater. If your firmware is an earlier version you will need to upgrade to the latest version prior to continuing. The following instructions have been tested.

Connecting to one of the campus Wi-Fi services will not affect any other Wi-Fi networks you have previously configured at home or elsewhere. Your device will always opt for the fastest and most secure connection available, meaning a configured Wi-Fi connection will automatically be favoured over a 3G, Edge or GPRS connection. Wi-Fi configurations remain in place even after disabling Wi-Fi on the device or turning the device off.

Connecting to Eduroam

Eduroam is the secure Enterprise wireless network available to all members of the University while on campus. Eduroam should always be used for Wi-Fi when available, this network provides strong, industry standard security.

Eduroam is a Wi-Fi network which is also available at the large number of other Higher Education Institutions (in the UK and abroad) participating in the eduroam scheme. It allows visiting members of other Universities to obtain a Wi-Fi internet connection when visiting Loughborough University, and will likewise allow Loughborough users to connect to the Internet when visiting other institutions. More information on eduroam.

  1. Go to the Home screen and touch Settings.

    Settings icon.

  2. Touch Wi-Fi.

    Settings.

  3. If your Wi-Fi is not already enabled (it says Wi-Fi Off at the top of the page), then place your finger on the switch and slide it to the right to switch it to On. With Wi-Fi enabled your device will scan for available networks and display them on the screen. Tap the name portion of the one called eduroam.

    WiFi ON.

  4. You will be prompted for a user name and password. Enter your usual University login with @lboro.ac.uk on the end. The @lboro.ac.uk extension is important as it is used to direct your authentication attempts to the authentication servers based at Loughborough University. Enter your usual Loughborough University password (remember the password is case-sensitive) and tap Join.

    Ask to Join Networks.

  5. You will then be asked if you wish to accept the Loughborough University 'Radius Server' certificate. This is required to ensure that only authorised devices can connect to this network, and prevents unauthorised access to your data. Touch Accept to approve the certificate and continue.

    Certificate screen.

  6. Your device will now complete the authentication with the network and the connection should now become active. This is indicated by a tick next to the name of the network in the list of available Wi-Fi networks.

    eduroam with tick.

  7. You are now connected to the Eduroam wireless network. Applications which use a wireless connection, such as Safari, e-mail, YouTube, etc. will now use this connection (or eduroam if that has also been set up) when it is available.

Alternative Connection Method

If your device is configured to prompt for a Wi-Fi network to connect to (enabled by default), then you will be asked to select a network when you launch Safari or any other application that uses an Internet connection.

Safari Select WiFi.

To configure a Wi-Fi connection from this screen, tap the name of the network you wish to connect to. From there, follow the instructions above from step 4 onwards.

'Forgetting' Wi-Fi Networks

If you no longer want your device to connect to Lboro or Eduroam, but want to keep Wi-Fi enabled on your device, you need to make the device 'forget' the network. (For instance you may need to connect to a specific other network and don't want the device defaulting to Lboro or Eduroam).

To do this:

  1. Go to the Home screen, touch the Settings icon and then select Wi-Fi as before. You will see the list of available networks, with a tick next to the one you are currently connected to.

    Wi-Fi Networks.

  2. Touch the blue and white arrow next to the name of the network you want to forget (usually the one you are currently connected to. This will display the connection details for that network.

    lboro details.

  3. Touch Forget this Network, and then touch Forget Network on the connection screen.

    Firget Network.

Your device will now no longer connect to this network automatically. If you have previously configured the device to connect to another network which is currently in range it will now connect to that one, otherwise it will remain idle.

If you wish to re-connect to the 'forgotten' network again in future, you will need to follow the connection instructions described above again.
