Backup, Restore, and Update Apple iPhone / iPod Touch software using iTunes
Introduction
iTunes allows you to create backups of settings, data, bookmarks, downloaded applications, and other information on your iPhone and iPod Touch. You can use the backup feature to restore these items back to your device after software restore or after device wipe.
Creating Backups
Once an iPhone or iPod Touch has been configured to sync (synchronise) with a particular computer, iTunes will automatically make a backup of the device on the computer when you sync. iTunes will not however automatically back up a device that is not configured to sync with that computer.
If you choose to update the software on the iPhone / iPod Touch, iTunes will back up the device automatically, even if it is not configured to sync with iTunes on that computer.
If you choose to restore the software on the iPhone / iPod Touch, iTunes will ask if you want to back up the device first before restoring back to factory default settings.
If you use a Bluetooth headset or car kit with an iPhone and you restore settings, you must pair the Bluetooth device with the iPhone again to use it.
