Acceptable Use Policy

The only systems we fully support are Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Macintosh OS X (versions supported by Apple). To successfully connect to the network with other types of computers, such as a Linux computer, you would need to configure the TCP/IP settings yourself, and unfortunately IT Services can give you very little assistance. However, if we detect problems caused by software or hardware, we may have to disconnect your socket to protect the service to other users. Additionally you may not be able to access all the services offered.

You must not send or receive data in any form that breaks the University Acceptable Use Policy: this includes indecent, offensive or illegal material, and also anything that breaks copyright legislation. You are not permitted to use any applications that are provided for this specific purpose in mind, for example Gnutella. The use of the word data means: graphical images, moving images, text, software, sound files including MP3 and WAV files or any other electronically transmittable material.

The University, through the members of staff responsible for the Hall Service, has the right to "port scan" your machine and browse any running services to detect possible breaches of the clauses contained within this policy. (Note: A port scan is a method of remotely checking what services are running on a computer system.)

You may connect any number of computers that you own to the Hall Service network point in your room. Name the first computer as HallNet-username; name the second as HallNet-username-2, the third HallNet-username-3. However IT Services are unable to assist in connection problems caused by routers, hubs, switches or wireless access points. If you use a wireless access point, please ensure that it is secured as you will be held responsible for all network activity coming from your network point.

You must not allow other people (apart from trusted IT Services support staff) access to your HallNet connection, via their computer or your own - you will be held responsible for all network activity coming from your network point. You must not configure your machine to provide any service to other users in your hall, on campus or connected to the Internet in general. This includes (but is not limited to) the provision of WWW servers, FTP servers, P2P servers, Talkers or Proxies of any kind.

Connection to external services that use a significant amount of bandwidth, which cannot be demonstrated to be relevant to your academic work and/or risks the denial of service to other users, is prohibited and users will find connection to these services will be withdrawn at any time.

You should not use the Hall Service to attempt to gain access to computing systems, data or other resources that you are not authorised to access. This includes (but is not limited to) password protected web sites, local departmental file servers, and the computers of other Hall Service users.

We reserve the right to disable access to any service if provision of access to that service will breach the terms of this policy, or any other policy, such as the JANET acceptable use policy.

Finally, you must have a virus checker on your computer, and you must keep it up to date. Virus checking software needs to be updated as new viruses are discovered. Please note that a virus infected PC may adversely affect other users of the University network. The Hall Network Service HallNet reserves the right to disconnect from the network any infected computer that we believe is adversely affecting other users.

Windows P.C. users will automatically fulfil this last obligation by following Windows Install Antivirus software instructions - which will automatically update itself. Macintosh OS X users will automatically fulfil this last obligation by following Mac OS X Install Antivirus software instructions. In either case you may omit this step if you have your own antivirus software and you do regularly keep it up to date.
