Google Applications
Documentation
The primary source of documentation about the Google Apps services is the Google Apps Help Centre. The following pages give a particularly good overview of the service:
Even if you already use Google services we would encourage you to familiarise yourself with Google Apps, as there are some differences between the services provided to individuals and those offered through the Google Apps system.

Getting started with Google Mail
Google Mail (also sometimes referred to as Gmail) has its own comprehensive documentation, accessible via the Help Centre. You may find this Gmail Getting Started Guide particularly useful.
While our statistics show that most of you read your e-mail using a Web browser such as Firefox or Safari, we recognise that many of you will prefer to use a dedicated e-mail program such as Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook, or from a mobile phone. Google provide connection information.
Use the following:
Incoming (IMAP) server: imap.gmail.com
Port: 993 (Use SSL)
Outgoing (SMTP) server: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 587 (Use TLS) or 465 (Use SSL)
Please note that for IMAP and POP access your Google user name is your University e-mail address (e.g. F.Bloggs-12@student.lboro.ac.uk) rather than your University user name, and your password is your University password.
Note that you must log in via the Web interface and enable IMAP.
Demos and training videos
There are a large number of videos illustrating the uses to which Google Apps may be put and showing you how to use key features. These can be viewed at the Google Apps Help training section and also via the Google Apps YouTube channel.
Help and assistance
Should you experience any problems with the Google Apps system we would encourage you to check the online documentation and in particular the list of known issues. Other people may already have had the same problem as you, and there may already be a fix or a workaround.
Google Apps Status Dashboard
Google provide a tool called the Google Apps Status Dashboard which lets you see the status of the services hosted by the Google Apps system. Where Google are experiencing problems with one or more services, this is indicated by a small "i" (for information) icon. You can click on this to learn more about the problem and what Google is doing about it.
