Materials Properties and Applications

Module aims:

The aim of the module is to give the student an introduction to engineering materials, their properties and applications.

Content:

Basic introduction to materials and microstructure. Classification, mechanical properties, hardness, toughness, viscoelectricity. Structure-property relationships, polymer crystallinity, enhancement of mechanical properties, composite materials.

Types of engineering materials, their modes of failure. Elastic and plastic behaviour, theoretical strength, defect theory, dislocations strengthening mechanisms. Service behaviour: creep, fatigue, corrosion, degradation. Manufacturing methods. Design aspects.

Engineering materials - main properties and current applications for:

- metals: carbon steels, heat treatment of plain carbon steels, alloy steels, cast iron and alloy cast irons, non-ferrous metals and alloys;

- polymers: thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers;

- composites: fibre reinforced plastics, laminates.
