Student story - Greg Slee

Industrial Placement at Triumph Motorcycles
Greg Slee – Electronic and Electrical Engineering (MEng)
Between the third and fourth years of Greg’s studies at Loughborough he was fortunate enough to gain an industrial placement at Triumph Motorcycles in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
His position in the company was as a Student Electrical Design Engineer, with responsibilities that included designing and testing the motorcycles' electrical system components.
Greg used the skills and knowledge that he gained through his university studies in a number of different areas whilst working at Triumph. His first year modules on programming were put to use when he was asked to test the functionality of new motorcycle instruments. This involved writing code that simulated how the bikes Engine Control Module communicated with the instruments. He also used some Fourier analysis theory when performing vibration testing on motorcycle components.
An important part of his time working at Triumph was to perform function tests on motorcycles to ensure that the quality of the electrical components fitted to the motorcycles were to a high standard. Greg was made responsible for testing and evaluating the results to ensure satisfactory quality of the components, or where appropriate liaising with the suppliers to make improvements. This sometimes involved changing the component drawing so that they were better suited to the application.
Whilst working for Triumph Greg improved his practical skills enormously as a lot of his work involved developing pre-production models. As well as recording test data he also had to solve current issues that occur from modifying motorcycles. This helped develop his understanding of electrical sub-system communication and how to interface signals from modified components.
