Spinout company recognised at Lord Stafford Award

Innovate Collaborate and Inspire: this is the theme of the annual Lord Stafford Awards, which  celebrate collaborative relationships between businesses and universities.

The Department is proud to report that Axilica was one of the short-listed finalists and were named runners-up in the ‘Innovation Achieved’ category, 2009.

This award category is for a business which has demonstrated the greatest potential for the product or service it developed with its partner university, or where that product or service has been prototyped and is market ready.

The competition this year was fierce with 12 shortlisted companies from across the region but Department spin-out company, Axilica, eventually emerged as runners-up. Their achievement was announced at the awards ceremony held this September at the EPIC Centre in Lincoln and hosted by Rob Pittam from BBC TV’s Working Lunch who made sure the evening went smoothly.

What did Axilica do to earn this accolade? They’ve made life a little easier for chip designers…The demand, driven by the continuing need to upgrade and enhance electronic consumer products and their features, is increasing. Bringing new computer chips to market is time-consuming and requires substantial expertise. Axilica have revolutionised this process with an innovative product that, for the first time, enables the design of computer chips to be entirely carried out using software. The company's FalconML software not only allows system designers to create prototypes more speedily but also allows them to do so with little or no knowledge of front-end hardware design and produces a design which is as efficient as possible in terms of its use of components and performance. The reduced development cost and timescales enables chip design companies to reap benefits of increased profit margins and faster times to market for their products.  The versatile technology can be applied to any electronic design situation so the potential for the product is immense.

Axilica benefited from major investment from IPSO Ventures and co-investment by Lachesis the East Midlands University seed fund and launched only two years ago.

"The university is always alert for opportunities to commercialise its outstanding research and development activities and Axilica is a perfect example of what can be achieved," said Dr Mulvaney. "The university's support has helped make inroads into a number of key markets that will generate sales and create jobs."
