What is Information Science

What is Information Science?

Information and knowledge are key commodities in the information age and the knowledge based society. Managing these assets enables people to succeed. Increasingly businesses manage data, information and knowledge in a way that enables them to capitalise on their expertise and stay competitive. Being able to systematically use these assets also gives individuals key transferable skills and the ability to be independent life long learners. Information Science therefore teaches people about the information landscape and knowledge creation and, specifically, how information can be organised and stored using

  • web technology
  • databases
  • taxonomy systems

accessed using information retrieval products; used, for example for competitor intelligence; and made available to other people through knowledge sharing and via information services and products such as Web based services, information departments or libraries.
