The Department

The Department of Information Science has staff offices around the outside of level 4 with computer labs and seminar rooms in the middle. The offices and labs are separated by a long corridor with three fire doors at strategic positions. There is a main foyer entrance with seating on either side of the entrance. The enquiries office is in room X412m (turn left in the foyer) and the Departmental Administrator is also in room X412. The Departmental Disabilities Officer (Shirley Horner: S.M.Horner@lboro.ac.uk) is in room X419.

Disabled Toilet access

If you enter into the Department via the main entrance/stairway you will arrive in the Foyer area. Access to the disabled toilet is from the Foyer.

If you enter the Department via the lift from lower levels then you will need to turn right, go down the corridor (through a couple of fire doors) until you reach the Departmental Foyer and access to the disabled toilet.

Means of escape for disabled people in case of an emergency

If a disabled person is in the Department they may need assistance as the lift cannot be used as a means of escape in case of fire. If you are a disabled person, the best strategy is to make your way to a stairway if at all possible or to wait for a fire marshall to assist you to the stairway. Look out for the fire marshall. The stairway is termed a refuge and is particularly suited for disabled people with mobility difficulties waiting to get further assistance out of the building. The fire marshall will ensure that the door to that staircase is closed when all other occupants have left. These fire doors will halt the smoke and flames from entering the refuge for a period of time. The marshall will leave the building and inform the evacuation officer immediately that a disabled person requires assistance and give exact details of your location. It is best to try to remain calm during this period when you may be on your own. Help is on its way.

Hearing loop

The Department of Information Science is partly equipped with an Induction loop hearing assistance system. The system is installed in all the teaching labs and the seminar rooms within the department.
