Pilkington - Building Accessibility
Library Self Guided Tour PDF, Levels 1-3 Level 4

The Pilkington Library has access for wheelchairs users. There are four allocated car parking spaces for users who are registered as disabled and have an orange or blue disabled sticker displayed in their vehicle. A lift is available in the Pilkington Library so that users with mobility problems can access all floors. If you require assistance to locate or use the lift please ask at Information and Enquiries. Toilet facilities for users with disabilities are available on Level 3 of the Pilkington Library.

Deaf Alerter

The Pilkington Library is equipped with a Deaf Alerter system which is a warning system for people who are deaf/hard of hearing. The alerter operates anywhere within the Pilkington Library. The system is permanently connected to the building's fire alarm control panel and closing bell, so that when either is activated, a signal is automatically sent to each alerter in the building. These small alerters can be placed in a pocket or attached to a belt. In the case of an emergency in the building, or the Library is closing, the alerter will vibrate and display a message warning the user to leave the building.

The Deaf Alerter system within the Pilkington Library is fitted with the All Call feature. All Call means that the alarm transmission is capable of being received not only by our own alerters, but also by those who have their own personal alerter. The All Call symbol is displayed at the entrance door. Visitors wishing to borrow an alerter while visiting the Pilkington Library should enquire at the Help Desk on Level 3. The Pilkington Library is the first University building to be equipped with the alerter system. It is hoped to survey the whole campus and to equip each department with the system in due course.

Means of escape for disabled people in case of an emergency

If a disabled user is situated on Level 3 of the building when the fire alarm sounds, he/she can leave via the front exit of the Library at that level. If they are situated on any other level of the building they will need assistance as the lift cannot be used. They will be conducted to the nearest entrance to a stairway on that floor by a fire marshall. This is termed a refuge. The fire marshall will then ensure that the door to that staircase is closed when all other occupants have left. These fire doors will halt the smoke and flames from entering the refuge for a period of time. The marshall will leave the building and inform the evacuation officer immediately that a disabled person requires assistance and give exact details of their location.
