Introduction
The main research focus of this group is the development of advanced image analysis and machine learning technologies that can be used to implement autonomous systems in a range of application areas in both hardware and software. Our research is underpinned by the development of new mathematical and algorithmic approaches that solve complex problems. We are interested in range of image analysis and computer vision techniques for scene understanding 2D and 3D (recognition of objects, environment, context, and events based on image and audio information), image manipulation and viewability metrics (enhancement and restoration of images), image transmission and coding (efficient approaches to representing image data to improve image quality, and coding standards), spatio-temporal and other models of information representation (for cryptography, information transmission, digital watermarking, video retrieval), mathematical techniques in computer vision (such as partial differential equations, shape from shading models), computer graphics (digital avatars), human factors in imaging (eye tracking, understanding user fatigue, user requirements and performance measurement on imaging tasks) and multi-scale multi-view imaging (for visual surveillance). Our machine learning interests are wide-ranging and include the development of new classifiers, feature selection, feature sub-space models, optimisation using evolutionary approaches, dynamic programming, and prediction models. The application areas of such research extend beyond computer vision research and include robotics, text analysis, non-image feature data, and stock-market forecasting.
